Travel the exotic Hoen region inhabited by creatures called Pokemon. Some people use Pokemon as pets, some use them for research, some use them for battling, and some use them for evil purposes. You will get a starter Pokemon, Treeko, Torchic, or Mudkip, and you will get a Pokedex from Professor Birtch which updates information about Pokemon right when you encounter one. You will venture foward to get gym badges and complete your Pokedex. On the way, you'll meet new Pokemon and friends. You can also try to catch the legendaries, Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza.
